affected

adjective

Influenced or touched by an external factor.

Example: This graph shows the use of a vaccine for the disease affected the pattern.

apparently

adverb

As far as one knows or can see.

Example: Apparently, there was a direct link between the administration of the vaccine and the number of cases of whooping cough among children.

approximately

adverb

Used to show that something is almost, but not completely, accurate or exact; roughly.

Example: There was a surge in the number of cases from 50,000 to approximately 170,000.

considerably

adverb

By a notably large amount or to a notably large extent; greatly.

Example: It peaked again in the early 1950s and fluctuated considerably.

drop

verb

Let or make (something) fall vertically.

Example: The number of cases dropped sharply.

figure

noun

A number, especially one which forms part of official statistics or relates to the financial performance of a company.

Example: The figure fell back in the next few years.

impact

noun

A marked effect or influence.

Example: The graph shows the impact of vaccinations on the incidence of whooping cough.

parallel

adjective

Occurring or existing at the same time or in a similar way; corresponding.

Example: It resulted in a parallel rise in the incidence of the illness.

resume

verb

Begin again or continue after a pause or interruption.

Example: Figures gradually fell back to their earlier level as vaccinations were resumed.

surge

noun

A sudden powerful forward or upward movement, especially by a crowd or by a natural force such as the tide.

Example: There was a surge in the number of cases.

vaccination

noun

The act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce immunity to a specific disease.

Example: The graph shows the impact of vaccinations on the incidence of whooping cough.

whooping cough
